1980

Articles, reviews of concerts and releases, and band member interviews from magazines and newspapers.

Amateur band Composition Of Sound - Vince Clarke, Andrew Fletcher and Martin Gore - recruit David Gahan as lead singer and play their first gig on 31st May. They change their name to Depeche Mode in late October. After getting shows at several Essex / East London clubs, they are approached by Daniel Miller of Mute Records, and record the tracks "Photographic", "Dreaming Of Me" and "Ice Machine" in December.

Wilko Stays Solid On The Gig Trail

[Basildon Evening Echo, 1st December 1980. Words: Mick Walsh.]

A mention of Depeche Mode in their local paper, ahead of a show at the Bridgehouse, which I believe is their first ever appearance in print. So early, it's free even of the enthusing about their youth and innocence that characterises early 1981 material. And you've got to laugh at the phonetic spelling of "Gahan"!
